During World War II, Yugoslavia was occupied by Germany and his family fled to Austria. Tony first worked in a stove factory, and in 1947, at an American Air Force Ordinance Center.

Tony married Margret Weiland in 1946, and in 1952 they immigrated to the United States with three children under the auspices of Church World Services. They settled in Belleville where Tony was employed by car dealerships as a body repairman for 42 years, retiring at age 70.

After the death of his first wife he married Gloria (Hall) Canfield in 1969, and later, Doris Blackburn in 1980.
