Obituary of Bernice J. Scoville

Bernice Jane (Crane) Scoville was born July 24, 1917 in Hubbell, Nebraska, and passed away June 8, 2012 at the age of 94 years 11 months.

She was the second daughter of Frank Ellis and Muriel Marjorie Crane. She was baptized in the Presbyterian Church in Hubbell, Ne. and remained a member until it disbanded. She then joined the Methodist Church in Hubbell, Ne. and then the United Methodist Church in Chester, Ne. She attended numerous grade schools in the Hubbell area and graduated from Hubbell High School in 1935. Bernice was a Girl Scout, enjoyed Epworth League and loved singing, dancing and reading.

On March 30, 1938, in Washington, Kansas, she was united in marriage to Daniel James Scoville. To this union five children were born: Marjorie, Jon, Connie, Deborah and Cindy. Dan and Bernice farmed together on farm land in Kansas and later bought a farm in Ne. where they farmed until 1979. At that time they retired and moved to Chester, Ne.

Bernice worked for Footes Service part-time where she was fondly called “necie” by her co-workers. She was a wonderful cook known for her homemade pies, cakes and fantastic homemade breads and rolls. Bernice was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, but foremost a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.

Bernice is preceded in death by her husband Dan, parents Frank and Muriel Crane, sisters Doris Germer and Hazel Kirk and grandson and granddaughter Brandon and Angie Grueber.

She will be forever lovingly remembered by her children: Marjorie and Jim Merritt of Bastrop, La., Jon and Leona Scoville of Geneva, Ne., Connie and Del Wit of Commerce City, Co., Deborah and Bradley Grueber of Goehner, Ne., Cindy and Mike Tipton of Chester, Ne. Ten grandchildren: Andrea and David Hayes of Collinston, La., Jared and Sandra Merritt of Monroe, La., Doug and Brenda Scoville of Clay Center, Ne., Shari and Bruce McDowel of Trumbull, Ne., Becky and Tom Goedert of Hastings, Ne., Kelly and Jerry Schmitt of Hebron, Ne., Joe Scoville of Omaha, Ne., Justin and Sara Wit of Commerce City, Co., John and Susan Wit of Bastrop, La., and Laura and Daniel Buethe of Lincoln, Ne.; 24 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, June 11, 2012 at the United Methodist Church, Chester, NE with Pastor Mark Baldwin, officiating.

Interment will be at the Chester Cemetery, Chester, NE.

Visitation will be from 1PM-9PM on Sunday at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Chester, NE with the family present to receive friends from 2PM-4PM.
