Obituary of Carrol J. Garst

Carrol Jean Garst, the daughter of Hugh Modlin and Ethel (Loomis) Modlin, was born September 10, 1933 at Otego, KS and passed away on March 14, 2012 at the Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, KS at the age of 78 years, 6 months, and 4 days.
Carrol grew up and attended the local public schools in the Mankato, KS area. On March 24, 1951 at Beloit, KS, she was united in marriage to Darrell L. Garst and to this union was born: Kenneth, Dennis, Carla, Kevin, and Jennifer.
The couple lived in California during the Korean Conflict ,later returning to Scandia, KS where they made their home. Carrol was a homemaker and worked at various businesses in Scandia and was the custodian at the Scandia United Methodist for many years.
She was a member of the EHU Group, an active member of the Scandia United Methodist Church and the Legion Auxiliary where she held many offices through the years. Carrol also was a volunteer on the library board for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Darrell Garst on Feb. 16, 1990, and a brother: Douglas Modlin.
Carrol is survived by her children: Kenneth W. Garst of Jewell, KS; Dennis L. (Viola) Garst of Scandia, KS; Carla J. Sanpaka of Scandia, KS; Kevin W. (Jean) Garst of Belleville,KS and Jennifer (Anthony) Maiorana of Manhattan, KS; two sisters: Phyllis O’Brien of Salina, KS and Letha (James) Garst of Mankato, KS; two brothers: Fred (Joyce) Modlin of Inman, KS and Curtis (Marilyn) Garst of Runge, TX; sister-in-law Patricia Modlin of Harvard, NE, 15 grandchildren: Eric Garst, Nathan Garst, Kade Garst, Tim Sanpaka, Brandon Sanpaka, Joe Sanpaka, Joshua Garst, Ethan Johnson, Samuel Maiorana, Deborah K. Bailey, Sierra D. Keever, Kyle Dawn Garst, Kayla Snyder, Shawnee Garst, and Sheridan Johnson, one step grandson, and 17 great grandchildren; other relatives, and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, March 19, 2012 at the United Methodist Church, Scandia, KS with Pastor Kathy Aeillo, officiating.
Interment will be at the Riverview Cemetery, Scandia, KS.
Visitation will be from 1PM until 9PM Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home at Scandia. The family will receive friends from 5PM-7PM Sunday at the funeral home.
