Obituary of Ernest J. Mikesell

Ernest Junior Mikesell, son of Ernest B. Mikesell and Mary C. (Larson) Mikesell was born May 7, 1929 on the family homestead north of Rydal, Kansas and went home to be with Jesus on February 2, 2017 at Republic County Hospital Long Term Care at the age of 87 years, 8 months and 26 days.
He attended Union Valley School and graduated from Belleville High School in 1947. He attended Miltonvale Wesleyan College for one year and then farmed for several years prior to enlisting and serving with the U.S. Air Force.
He was united in marriage to Margaret H. Kroeker on June 10, 1955 and they later moved to Manhattan, Kansas where Ernie earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Math at Kansas State University. Ernie then taught math for several years at El Dorado Community College (now Butler County Community College) before moving back to the family farm in 1962. During this time, four children were born, Judith, David, Nancy, and Fred.
Ernie’s most fulfilling years of teaching were at Miltonvale Wesleyan College, where he taught math and science. There were also short stints as a high school math teacher at Concordia in the 60s and Jamestown in the 70s.
Throughout his years of teaching, Ernie was still farming on weekends and summers. Finally, in the mid -70s, he began farming full time. Ernie was involved in various farm and community organizations. He served on the Republic County Farm Bureau Board and on the NCK Free Fair Board for a number of years.
Ernie grew up in the Belleville Wesleyan Church. For many years he taught Sunday School and served on the local church board, plus serving on various statewide church committees.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest B and Mary C. Mikesell, wife, Margaret H. Mikesell, one great grandson, two brothers.
Ernie is survived two daughters, Judy Hettenbach (Bruce) of Abilene, KS, and Nancy Gossell (Greg) of Lee’s Summit, MO, two sons, Dave Mikesell (Lisa) of Republic, KS, and Fred Mikesell of Scandia, KS, eleven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, one brother in law, Rex Eckert of Dallas, OR, other relatives and many friends, who will miss him deeply, but rejoice that he is at home with Jesus.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM, Saturday, February 11, 2017, Belleville Wesleyan Church, Belleville, KS, conducted by, Rev. Mark McGregor and Rev. Fred Mikesell.
Interment will be in Union Valley Cemetery, Rural Belleville, KS.
Memorials may be given to family choice.
Friends may call on Thursday from 1 PM to 8 PM, Friday from 9 AM to 8 PM at Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Belleville, KS where the family will receive friends on Friday from 5 PM to 7 PM
