Obituary of Evelyn May Heltne

Evelyn May Heltne, daughter of Edward Carlgren and Inga Tiller Carlgren, was born May 1, 1919 in the family home near Norway, Kansas. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviors’ Lutheran Church. On November 15, 2013, at the age of 94, she passed away peacefully.

She attended school in Norway, Kansas and enjoyed participating in basketball and tennis and graduated in 1937. She attended the State Teachers College of Emporia, Kansas, and received her teacher’s certificate and subsequently taught at Forty-Eight Country School east of Norway, Kansas.

In September of 1942, she met the love of her life, Adolph Bernhard (Bernie) Heltne. In 1943, she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she worked as a nursing assistant at the Fairview Hospital. On June 7th, 1944, Evelyn and Bernie were married at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Norway, Kansas.

She and Bernie lived in Bradley, South Dakota; Goodridge, Minnesota; and Storla, South Dakota. In each location, Bernie served as pastor. She was an active partner in the ministry as the pastor’s wife, involved especially with the youth groups. She cherished her many life-long friendships from the parishes they served. Evelyn and Bernie returned to Norway, Kansas in 1978, where she was active in the church and community. She delighted in participating in the Fall Harvest Stand, the annual church Bazaar and the Norway Women’s Coffee group. She enjoyed being with her brothers, sisters-in- law, nieces and nephews, grandchildren, and friends of her youth. She also enjoyed the many visits from her niece, Kathy Heltne Swanson, and friends from previous parishes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph Bernhard; her parents, Edward and Inga Carlgren; and brothers Carrol, Ivan, Loren and Joseph, and sister-in-law Gladys Carlgren. She is survived by son Carl and wife Brenda, Barnes, Wisconsin; son Paul and wife Trish, Scandia, Kansas; daughter Rebecca and husband Jerry Janulewicz, Grand Island, Nebraska; and daughter Ilah and husband Rodney Gilreath, Golden, Missouri. Also surviving Evelyn are eight grandchildren: Tiffany Zitzewitz, Carissa Dobrinski, Briony Bresnahan, Kyle Heltne, Austin Heltne, Nathan Janulewicz, Sarah Rippe and Jenny Tuten; and seven great-grandchildren: Tyler and Maija Zitzewicz, Isabella Dobrinski, Aubrey and Cora Bresnahan, Declan Heltne, and Sawyer Rippe. She is also survived by her brother Charles Carlgren and wife Vivian, and sisters-in-law, Aileen Carlgren, Norma Carlgren and Clarice Pruitt, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given to Family Choice.
Funeral services will be held Three PM, Thursday, Nov 21, 2013, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Norway, Ks, conducted by Pastor Tom Kamprath.
Interment will be made in Norway Cemetery, Norway, Ks.
Friends may call on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 AM to 9 PM at Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Belleville, Ks., where the family will receive friends from 7 PM to 8 PM.
