Obituary of Louis L. Johnson

Louis L. Johnson, the son of Robert Lee Johnson and Edna Rene (Rogers) Johnson, was born September 13, 1930 at rural Chanute, KS and passed away on October 29, 2014 at the Republic County Hospital, Belleville, KS at the age of 84 years, 1 month, and 16 days.
Louis grew up in the Chanute, KS area, graduating from Chanute High School. He then attended Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, KS where he attained his bachelor’s degree and later his master’s degree. Louis was later certified as a School Psychologist by Emporia State University.
Louis served with the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict, being stationed in various areas in the states until his honorable discharge.
On May 24, 1955 he was united to Evelyn Ann Barrett and to this union three children came to bless the home: Linton, Sidney, and Janet.
The couple moved to Belleville, KS in 1961 where Louis taught government and psychology. He also coached junior and senior high football and basketball.
Louis ran the time clock at football and basketball games for many years. He later became the School Psychologist for the North Central Kansas Coop for several years until his retirement in 1990.
Louis was a member of the Belleville Lions Club, serving as lion tamer for many years. He served as zone chair for area Lions Clubs from 1994-1999 and was District Governor for the 1999-2000 term. He was involved with the Kansas Lions Band and on the Kansas Lions Band Foundation for several years. Louis also was a chaperone at the Kansas Lions Band camp for 7 years. He received the Melvin Jones Fellow award for his many years of service to Lions.
He served two terms with the Silver Hair Legislature in Topeka, KS and his committee was instrumental in passing the Silver Alert legislation. Louis was the local treasurer for the Council on Aging and a board member/ volunteer for the Belleville After School Program. He also was a volunteer for American Red Cross Bloodmobile, and a member of the United Methodist Church, along with the V.F.W.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife-Evelyn in 2012, granddaughter-Brenda Johnson; two brothers, Marion Johnson and Carl Johnson, and sister, Leone Mintz and her husband, Allen.
Louis is survived by two sons, Linton Johnson and Sidney (Cindy) Johnson all of Belleville, KS; one daughter, Janet (Barry) Thayer of Silver Lake, KS; five grandchildren: Lisa and Kyle Johnson, Jeffery Johnson, and Kayla and Travis Thayer, and 6 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014 at the Bachelor-Surber Memorial Chapel, Belleville, KS with Pastor Kathy Aeillo, officiating.
Interment will be at the Belleville Cemetery, Belleville, KS.
Visitation will be from 1PM until 9 PM on Thursday, and from 9AM until 9PM on Friday with the family greeting friends from 6PM until 8PM on Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Belleville Lions Club.
