Norman Dwight Underwood peacefully passed away Monday, May 15th surrounded by his family.
Dwight was born November 1, 1935 to Philip and Lona Underwood in Otego, Kansas. He was raised on the family farm with his parents and three siblings. He graduated from Mankato High School in 1954. Norman was active in the Kansas Army National Guard from 1954 – 1960. His unit was activated during the Berlin Crisis and he served as a sergeant in the Army National Guard from 1961 – 1962. He worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation from 1961 - 1996. On August 26, 1962, Dwight married Lorena Mae Badger and began his family having Debra Kay in 1965 then blessed by their surprise with Kimberly Joy in 1976. Lorena went to her final reward in 1994 after a two year battle of cancer. He and the family were blessed by his marriage to Carol Elaine Nash on June 21, 1996.
His life took him from his native Kansas town of Belleville to Abilene, Salina, and finally Owasso, Oklahoma where he and Carol could be closer to the girls. Throughout his life he was active in farming and loved being outside. Enjoying quality time with his family and grandkids was among his favorites. You could see the love in his eyes for his family. He had an amazing heart and definitely knew what deep love was. Dwight was a Godly man and loved to socialize and go to church. He was a servant leader following Jesus. He was a very giving man who had a gentle heart and wore his heart on his sleeve. He taught his daughters to be hard workers and never give up. He was always supportive and his daughters knew that he was proud of them. His hobbies were wood working, raising a garden and fishing.
Dwight is preceded by his parents Philip and Lona Black Underwood, wife Lorena Underwood his brother Warren Underwood and a sister Ardell Calder. He is survived by his second wife Carol Underwood, sister, Donna Wacker, daughter Debra Looper and his son in law John Looper. His daughter, Kimberly Hurd and his four grandchildren Hunter and Wynter Davis, Isabella Hurd, and Jace Robertson.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am Monday, May 22, 2017, at Central Christian Church, Belleville, Kansas, conducted by Pastor Jeremy Wittwer. Interment will be in Belleville Cemetery. Military Graveside service by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Visitation will be held at Bachelor Surber Funeral Home from 1:00 to 8:00 pm Sunday, May 21st and family will receive friends from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made out to the funeral home Bachelor Surber, 1322 19th Street, Belleville, Kansas and will be determined by family’s choice.
