Obituary of Richard L. “Dick” Childs

Richard L. “Dick” Childs, the son of Arthur Orville Childs and Ethel M. (Wilkes) Childs, was born June 25, 1934 at Belleville, KS and passed away on August 31, 2014 at the Salina Regional Health Center, Salina, KS at the age of 80 years, 2 months, and 6 days.
Dick grew up in rural Republic County attending Beaucamp Rural School and later graduated from Belleville High School, Belleville, KS in 1952. On March 22, 1953, he was united in marriage to Charlotte Miller and to this union was born two sons, Barry and Jim. The couple made their home in rural Republic County for many years, moving to Belleville in recent years. Dick was a loving caregiver to his wife for over 61 years.
Dick was a lifelong farmer and resident of Republic County.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Belleville, KS where he was active in numerous committees through the years among them being the co-chairman of the Food Stand for 11 years. Dick was a 50 year member of the Belleville Masonic Lodge and a charter member and still serving as secretary/ treasurer of the Rural Chester Fire Department. He was a past board member of the PCA and Federal Land Bank for 25 years, the rural school district board, and a past member of the Belleville Flying Club. Dick received the Master Farmer award in 1999 and also received the 1996 Kansas Bankers Assoc. award for soil conservation. He was a past board member on the Belleville Country Club and the Republic County Extension Council. Dick was a 4-H Member and a parent leader for the Liberty Rose Creek 4-H Club. He enjoyed many activities including: flying, water skiing, and was an avid golfer.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Ethel, and his sister, Donna Wampler.
He is survived by his wife Charlotte Childs of Belleville, KS; two sons, Barry (Susan) Childs of Belleville, KS and Jim (Pati) Childs of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 8 grandchildren: Katie (Kelly) Struebing of Concordia, KS, Kurt (Kelli) Childs of Belleville, KS, Matt Childs of Denver, Colorado, Amanda Childs of Cazenovia, New York, Laura Childs of Eureka, California, Greg Janitell and Steve Janitell both of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Christina (Robert) Klamser of Denver, Colorado; 6 great grandchildren: Carson, Brady, Collin, Harrison, Shepard and Magnolia; one sister Betty Jackson of Catonsville, MD, and one brother, Dr. Edward “Mitch” Childs of Big Timber, Montana, nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, September 4, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church, Belleville, KS with Pastor Emily Meckley, officiating.
Interment will be at the Belleville Cemetery, Belleville, KS.
Visitation will be from 1PM until 9 PM on Tuesday and from 9AM until 9 PM on Wednesday at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home where the family will greet friends from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM on Wednesday.
Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church or family choice.
