Robert Duane Hayes

September 26, 1934 – November 27, 2014

Robert Duane Hayes passed away quietly on Nov. 27, 2014 at The Villages Regional Hospital. Robert, or Bob as he was known to by his friends & family, the second son of Lester and Louise Hayes was born in Hebron, Nebraska and grew up on a farm near Chester. Bob graduated from Chester High School in 1951 at the age of 16. After enlisting in the army, he married Norma Naysmith on May 24, 1954.

During his Army Service, Bob was stationed at Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey and Red Stone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. His military service included teaching at the Ordinance Guided Missile School. His knowledge and proficiency in rocketry and electronics enabled Bob to work various positions in the electronics field and space program. At NASA, Bob helped develop the telemetry system for Project Mercury, Gemini and Apollo. He also did early work at SAC on the radar beacon for the B-58 Hustler Bomber. Later career work included designing an early digital telephone switch for Stromberg Carlson which he holds a US patent for, as well as Bar Code Scanners and Mag stripe encoding used on credit cards.

His experience in electronics enabled him to start his own company, Advanced Micro Technology. His company designed and developed energy management systems for Tyson Foods, Kraft Foods and various other food processing plants.

With his work on the space program and after, Bob travelled to all 50 states and abroad and lived in Nebraska, Kansas, Alabama, California, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Texas, Maryland, and finally in Florida from 1969 where he and Norma have resided in the City of Winter Springs.

He is survived by his wife, Norma of 60 years. Their 3 children: Sheryl Hayes-Pupko( Richard), Brenda Hayes Brown (Rick), and Randal (Lauren) Hayes. Three grandchildren: Andrew (Monica) Shinn, Allyson Hayes and Carly Hayes. Three step-grandchildren: Justin, Sean and Brendan Brown, and two great grandchildren: Jack Brown and Haylee Brown. Two Brothers: Harold Hayes and family and Cecil Hayes and family. His sister Marjorie Darlene (Hayes) Everhart and family.

Bob was inventive and talented. His expertise on computers was well known and he will be missed by all who knew him.

Graveside services were held Two PM, Saturday, December 6, 2014, Chester Cemetery, Chester, Nebraska, conducted by, Pastor Mark Baldwin.
Interment was in Chester Cemetery, Chester, Nebraska.
