Obituary of Wilfried W. “Bill” Wegener

Wilfried W. “Bill” Wegener, passed from this life on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at the Blue Valley Lutheran Nursing Home, Hebron, NE at the age of 95 years, 8 months, and 29 days.
Bill was born to William and Anna (Kluender) Wegener on April 2, 1916 in Ruskin, Thayer County, NE. He was baptized April 9, 1916 and confirmed June 1930 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Ruskin, NE. He graduated from Concordia Teachers College, Seward, NE in June 1937. He then attained his Bachelors of Science degree in 1941 and later his Master’s Degree from the University of Nebraska in 1953. On August 26, 1942, he was united in marriage to Lillian Adelia Sell. Lillian and Bill devoted their lives to serving the Lord through the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and it school system. In this effort, they served in Springfield, Illinois; Palmer, KS; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Montebello, California; El Monte, California; Jefferson City, Missouri; St. Louis, Missouri; then retired to Hebron, NE and Pharr, Texas, returning to Hebron, NE in recent years. Bill was a committed and life-long member of the Lutheran Church in each of these communities.
In their retirement years, Lillian and Bill joined a volunteer effort called Laborers For Christ to help congregations in Lincoln, NE; Springfield, Ohio; Bear, Delaware; Fayette, Missouri; Kansas City, MO and Palmer, KS build church buildings. Bill is survived by 3 sons, and 2 daughters and their families: Kenneth and Kay Wegener of Alexandria, Virginia and their sons Steven and wife Niloufar and Kevin; Ruth and Clay Jones of Buffalo, MO; David and Barb Wegener of Pompano Beach, Florida; Dorothy and Bill Neugebauer of Euclid, Ohio and their children: Erich and Joanne; Mark and Rena Wegener of Columbia, MO and their sons: Pearce and Alex. Also surviving: sister in laws: Margaret Flathman of St. Joseph, MO. Leona Sell of Chester, NE, Mabel Wegener of Hebron, NE and Grace Wegener of Buhl, Idaho.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents: William and Anna Wegener; his wife Lillian on May 5, 2005; six brothers: Herbert, Alfred, Erhardt, Paul, Erich, and baby boy Wegener; three sisters: Edna Mussman, Anna Lindemann, and Edith Wentzel. Bill’s strength as a husband, father, and friend was grounded in his unshakeable faith and trust in the Lord Jesus. This faith sustained his wife and his children through life’s up and downs and carried him through recent struggles with his own health. Two of his favorite hymns, “I Am Trusting Thee, Lord Jesus” and “Praise God, From Whom All Blessings Flow” express his faith and philosophy throughout his life. His favorite Psalm was Psalm 23, “The Lord is my Shepherd”
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at the Faith Lutheran Church, Hebron, Nebraska, conducted by Pastors Wayne Wentzel and Brian Francik.
Interment will be made in St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Chester, NE. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM Monday, Jan. 2, 2012 at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Chester, NE and after 10:00 AM Tuesday at the Church. Memorials are suggested to family choice.
